Royal Caribbean's original production, 'Flight: Dare to Dream,' features a remarkable engineering feat—a movable, flying replica of the Wright brothers' original airplane. This production, showcased aboard the Symphony of the Seas, narrates the history of air and space travel in reverse, beginning with a futuristic journey to Mars and concluding with the iconic 1903 flight at Kitty Hawk. The EPS team, under significant pressure to deliver a climactic experience, engineered a scaled-down model of the Wright Flyer with a 22-foot wingspan that performs complex aerial maneuvers controlled by the actor piloting it. This innovative design integrates manual controls to ensure reliability and safety, making the flyer both a ride-on prop and a wearable costume. The project, which involved meticulous planning and collaboration with partners like AMC Fabrication and Flying by Foy, culminated in a lightweight, durable aircraft that enhances the theatrical spectacle and has become a highlight of the show.
